As the October 2021 deadline approaches to implement the FDA’s bacterial risk mitigation guidance, blood centers and hospitals have been evaluating how to ensure a safe and available platelet supply.

In this webinar, University of Utah Health presents its approach to mitigating bacterial risk in platelets with pathogen reduction and testing. A simulation model that compares the bacterial safety of different FDA Guidance testing strategies is also discussed.

Dr. Metcalf completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Stanford University. His specific interest is in data-driven approaches to improve understanding of transfusion reactions, patient blood management, and innovation. Dr. Metcalf is a member of the AABB Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee, the AABB Patient Blood Management Standards Committee, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Transfusion, Apheresis, and Cellular Therapy Committee.
