The American Red Cross (ARC) presents its experience with use of the anaerobic culture. Though the culture methodology discussed by ARC differs from final FDA guidance methods, this discussion may provide insights when assessing guidance options as virtually all culture-based detection strategies now require the addition of anaerobic culture.

As Chief Medical Officer of Biomedical Services of the American Red Cross, Dr. Young provides medical guidance, vision, and strategic direction focused on donor and patient safety objectives. She also provides leadership and support to the research divisions of Scientific Affairs and Transfusion Innovations. Prior to joining the Red Cross, Dr. Young served as a tenured Professor and Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine and the Stem Cell Laboratory at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Dr. Young also led a successful, funded research program focused on Wnt pathway in tissue repair. Her scientific group’s findings have resulted in over 90 peer reviewed original research publications and several patents.
